EPIRB
Survival Offshore Systems Pty Ltd (SOS) is a supplier and service agent for 406 mHz EPIRBS used and required for Bushwalking, Sailing, Fishing, Commercial Shipping, Oil & Gas Industries, etc.
From 1st February 2009, all EPIRB’s must comply with the 406 mHz frequency.
EPRIB Registration:
All EPIRB’s must be registered with AMSA and this can be done on line at www.beacons.amsa.gov.au This registration ensures appropriate contact in an emergency OR false alarm. Please note that registration is only valid for two years and you will need to confirm all relevant details and follow the AMSA guidelines. Re-registration is free, however fines will be imposed for not re-registering. EPIRB registration is a responsibility of the purchaser.
Annual Survey:
SOS is equipped to carry out 406 mHz EPIRB annual testing as set out in the IMO 1040 regulations for commercial users under SOLAS chapter IV. Recreational users can have the satisfaction and confidence of their unit tested for signal accuracy at SOS.
GPS – EPIRB’s:
A feature to consider when selecting an EPIRB, is the inclusion of GPS signaling which reduces the search area to 0.1 nm radius, from 3.0 nm radius for a standard 406 mHz unit. GPS units are a popular choice for PLB's (Personal Location Beacons) which are carried on your person and can be automatically or manually activated in the event of a MOB (Man Over Board) situation, or if stranded on land in rough terrain. The search time is greatly reduced in these time-critical situations with the addition of the GPS facility.
Other points to consider in your choice of EPIRB and/or PLB is the temperature range you may be exposed to. In the event the EPIRB is to be used in an environment with a temperature below -20°C, a Class 1 EPIRB must be selected as distinct from a Class 2 EPIRB. Make sure you advise your EPIRB supplier of the operating temperatures you expect to encounter.
Search time and the remoteness of your journey may also require you to consider the battery life of your EPIB/PLB selection. Battery life can range from 24 hours to 48 hours.
